The Rubik’s Cube made its debut and was named Toy of the Year. Also, we saw Pacman, the Mini Metro and Post-It notes for the very first time.

1981

A royal wedding and a wedding on the cobbles of Coronation Street, Only Fools and Horses made its debut and Bucks Fizz won Eurovision.

1982

A royal birth and a royal intrusion, Channel 4 made an appearance along with Brookside, E.T. hit the box office and Italy won the World Cup.

1983

Margaret Thatcher started a second term as PM, TV-AM appeared on our screens as did Match of the Day and we saw cordless phones.

1984

Ronald Reagan made a risky joke whilst testing a microphone, British miners went on strike and Frankie Goes To Hollywood told us to Relax.

1985

Live Aid took place in London and Philadelphia, the wreck of the Titanic was photographed and EastEnders was televised for the first time.

1986

A major accident at Chernobyl, the UK and France announce plans for the Channel Tunnel and Dyson launched their first vacuum cleaner.

1987

An underground fire at King’s Cross station in London, Tom Cruise married Mimi Rogers and Going Live was new on TV.

1988

Pound notes ceased to be legal tender, Scott and Charlene got married in Neighbours and wax jackets became a new trend.

1989

Bush and Gorbachev declared the end of the Cold War, crop circle mania broke out in Britain’s fields and The Simpsons made its debut.
